Shaq quoted saying Kobe should win MVP

In a recent locker room interview after the Suns loss to the Boston Celtics, Shaquille Oneal was asked who should win the NBA MVP award, Shaq replied,

“The Kobester. He’s an assassin.”

“With LeBron [James] coming in right behind,” O’Neal added. “After that, I really haven’t been paying attention.”

What about Garnett?

“I’m going to have to go with my guy” — Stoudamire — “before him,” O’Neal said. “All day, every day.”

Looks like old Shaq has come around to respecting Kobe’s game again…

Andrew Bynum Injury: Lakers.com Rehab Workout Video

Lakers.com has a nice video showing what Andrew Bynum has been doing in his workout regimen to get back on the floor.
He looks pretty mobile, and seems like he is just preparing himself for full speed game situation contact.

You also get to see the $20,000 treadmill that Andrew runs on. This special treadmill only make Andrew run using 60-65 percent of his body weight, so he won’t put any extra wear on his knee.

Derek Fisher has Torn Tendon in Foot

Derek Fisher | photo is rightful property of owner LA Times — Derek Fisher has a partially torn tendon in his right foot, an injury that typically requires six to eight weeks of rest, although the Lakers point guard will try to play through it.

An MRI exam Friday confirmed that Fisher injured his peroneus longus tendon after pushing off the foot while changing direction in Wednesday’s game against Charlotte.

“I feel good enough to see if I can help the team,” Fisher said. “That’s basically what the decision is going to be based on, is how I feel out there and whether I can really be effective enough to be a positive influence on helping us win games. If at any point I start to feel like I can’t do that, then I’ll make a decision at that point.”

Fisher said he initially felt tightness under his foot a couple of weeks ago that was similar to the sensation of plantar fasciitis, which is painful swelling in the arch of the foot. The flash point came against Charlotte, although further damage cannot be done to the tendon, Lakers officials said.

“If this happened during the middle of the season or something like that, he would probably rest for six to eight weeks in order to heal,” team spokesman John Black said Friday. “It’s a pain and inflammation thing. If he can play, he’ll be on anti-inflammatory and pain medication, and try to play through it.”

The Lakers will officially list Fisher as day-to-day.

Lakers injury update from Phil Jackson — LA Times

LA Times — The biggest news was a notable lack of center Pau Gasol, who will not play tonight against Charlotte and is doubtful for Friday’s game against Memphis, Coach Phil Jackson said.

Gasol has sat out six games because of a moderate sprain in his left ankle. Jackson said Gasol didn’t have a setback but also “didn’t improve between Saturday and today.”

“It’s swelling,” Jackson said. “Swelling creates soreness. I’m sure he’d like to be back and play [against] Memphis, but I don’t know if that’s a possibility or not. That’s a pretty short order.”

Center Chris Mihm took part in individual drills with assistant coach Jim Cleamons but still wasn’t practicing. Forward Trevor Ariza was doing some light shooting but is not expected back before the playoffs start.

Center Andrew Bynum was nowhere to be seen, although he continues to run on an anti-gravity treadmill. The Lakers hope he returns for a handful of games before the regular season ends April 15.

Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher were pretty much given the day off by Jackson, partly to heal and partly because they logged extensive time in the Lakers’ 123-119 overtime victory Monday at Golden State.

Odom played all 53 minutes and Bryant, who played almost 52 minutes, sported a purple-and-black cut under his left eye, the day-after reminder of a Baron Davis elbow that required five stitches. Bryant also revealed that he had suffered a sprained right ankle in Sunday’s equally frenzied 115-111 loss to the Warriors.

Laker Rhapsody — YouTube Video –Kobe Parody

Here is a video that has been kinda viral in “Laker Nation.” This video shows the trials and tribulations of Kobe in the last couple of years. Phil Jackson says Lakers are frontrunner in NBA Playoffs

Phil JacksonSan Francisco Chronicle — “I think we’re the front-runner,” Jackson said. “If we had a healthy roster, I’d be very much more comfortable saying that. But at this point, given our schedule, I think we have a real good opportunity.”

Unlike the Warriors, whose finishing gauntlet through the West still includes a four-game road trip with stops in San Antonio, Dallas and New Orleans, the Lakers play 10 of their final 13 games at home.

And of the top nine teams, rounded out by the Hornets, Rockets, Jazz, Suns, Spurs, Mavericks, Warriors and Nuggets, Jackson said it’s unfathomable to think that one won’t be a part of the playoffs.

“I couldn’t imagine,” Jackson said. “I don’t see any team losing momentum. Maybe Houston is a team that’s in that position, but we’ll know that later. They’ve played at such a high level for so long.”

Gasol, Bynum Injury Update

Daily News — Pau Gasol was able to shoot and do some on-court drills before the game on Friday, but Jackson said he wasn’t optimistic about Gasol (ankle) playing in either of the Lakers’ upcoming games against Golden State on Sunday in Los Angeles or Monday in Oakland.

“I don’t anticipate he’ll play in the Golden State games. I’d like him to. I think that would be a good opponent for him … but that might be impossible for us to even remotely have that as a possibility,” Jackson said. “But I think in the next week there’s a chance he could come back.”

Jackson said he saw Andrew Bynum running on the treadmill when he came into the office Friday morning and that “he looked great” but that “we’re still watching his progress.”

Kobe’s Play makes Charles Barkley eat his words

charles barkleyBack in the playoffs a year ago Charles Barkley gave Kobe all the criticism he could, calling him “very selfish.”

Well look now, Charles has named Kobe his NBA MVP choice this season in a recent TNT broadcast saying, “If I was going to give it to somebody in the East, I would give it to Kevin Garnett because they’ve got the best record, but the West is much tougher, much better competition…..Chris Paul has been a one-man wrecking crew. But Kobe Bryant is the best player we’ve got in the NBA. You’ve got an injured Bynum, working Gasol in and now Gasol is out, and to still have the best record in the [West], that’s why I would give the MVP to Kobe Bryant.”
